Panelists on eco-friendly cities at the Globe 2012 conference in Vancouver say studies have proven the way buildings are designed has a big impact on the people who use them.

Several times a week, a truck rolls up to a non-descript sheet metal-clad industrial building on Victoria’s upper harbour. The trucks dump loads of small chunks of wood, waste that has been reclaimed from construction sites in the region and acquired from a nearby recycling facility.

Vic West - A Community on the Rise

Starting at 8:15 a.m. in the covered courtyard of Vic West elementary school, kids spread jam on toast or cheese on bagels.

Some warmly-dressed parents operate the toaster and hand out yogurt.

This is the new breakfast program, launched Oct. 4, thanks to a donation from HMCS Vancouver.

Rick Fedrizzi steps in as chair of WGBC

Stepping down as chair of the World Green Building Council Tony Arnel said he had seen a fringe green movement become a mainstream industry during  his three year term. He is replaced by Rick Fedrizzi, president and chief executive officer of the US Green Building Council.

Dockside Green: Phase Two

The second phase of the Dockside Green project in Victoria, British Columbia, recently received a high-scoring LEED Platinum certification from the Canada Green Building Council. Known as Balance, this part of the development comprises 171 residential units in two adjacent towers. It earned a LEED score of 63 points out of a possible 70, matching the score of Dockside Green's first phase, Synergy (featured in ArchitectureWeek No. 401).
